OUGD406 - Studio Brief 03 - Collaborative Practice - Leeds Library Exhibition Branding

For this brief I was to work in a small group/creative team, and put together a pitch for the concept, branding, identity and promotional collateral for the book cover exhibition at Leeds Library.
The branding had to be all of our own ideas and design.

As a group we first agreed to start on the logo and design something that would communicate Leeds College of Art as being part of the exhibition. We discussed the correct shapes, text and colour until we had the perfect elements for the design.

Below is the final logo design:

As a group we figured that once we had the logo design down the rest of the branding would follow easily, as to us, the logo set the basis of all of the design look and shape.
To incorporate LCA we created a design and shape that was similar to the LCA logo, however we wanted to get across the idea of layers and pages in our designs, to give our work more impacts and importance. So we overlapped different shapes to give a more effective design.
We experimented with many different colour ways, such as blue, green and purple, however non seemd to fit the shape or desogn of the logo, we finally agreed on bold yellow and pink with black outline, which we thought looked good and gave a new colour taste to modernistic design.
'THE COVER' is the name we branded our design with as it was short and simple, we also included short information about the course and students that were part of the exhibition as we thought it was important and relevant to the exhibition.
Our choice in font was 'Din' and 'Gill sans semi bold', we thought these fonts worked well with the modernistic design of the logo as they were clear fonts that could be easily read. We kept the text in black to match the theme of the logo.

After we had completed the logo the rest of the branding then followed easily.

We agreed to set jobs for each person in the group as we thought this would save time as we could regroup and discuss the design of each members work as it was in process.

The brochure/book that was created in the style of the logo to keep consistency, this contained all of the information about the exhibition that viewers would need. The text and images were formed to fit with the shape of the each page to give a smoother looking inside design. The font used was consistent with the logo and the colour of the font on each page differed based on the actual colour of the page.

Invites were created to provide order when it came to the exhibition night, again in the style of our logo but with different text to suit the agenda.

A layout of the actual exhibition was made so to give an idea of what the inside would look like during the actual event. We decided on pinning work to design boards/large walls, and then to save space and to give a fuller look we decided on using hangers which would hang from the ceiling to provide extra storage space for the work.

For the name tags we kept the design consistent, however we agreed that the name tags should have a lighter look to them being that they are so small. so we cut down on the layers of the image and instead used more boarder lines. Then to add to the effect and light design we decided to cover each name tage in a layer of thin plastic which would hold the text of each name tag.

We wanted to give a feel that the exhibition was actually branded with our design and colour so we made posters filled with a short amount of needed/important information about the details of the exhibition also including the actual name of which students were contributing.

Signs for direction purposes

Website and social media was my personal given job in the group, I was responsible for uploading all the design work made by the other members of the group also using every single piece of information needed about the exhibition onto the website, for each separate webpage had a different agenda about the exhibition.
I kept the design of the website modernistic and clean, light and airy, and i made sure it was easy to navigate by having my team member try out the website and locate certain information.

Using the same colour way as our branding and incorporating the same fonts used.
Lastly I then linked the websit to our social media pages. Facebook and Twitter.

We agreed that social networking was a good idea to connect with a larger audience and to quickly be able to upload information and images about the exhibition, meaning we had a closer contact with out viewers.

We then presented our branding work and physical designs to a group of secon year students who then gave us feedback about our design choices and overall image.

The feedback we recieved was

  • Good colour choice
  • Consistent design, however maybe have been too overused through out
  • Nice shaping used as this was different and fresh however may become difficult to create during physical process
  • Overall a good concept.

I am really happy with how our branding turned out, I was happy with the groups work as well as my own, and I think we worked very well as a group with plenty of communication and questions. A lot of time was spent together creating the design which I enjoyed.
