OUGD404 - Studio Brief 02 - Task 01 - What is a book?

Today I worked in a group to answer questions that would help me really have the ability to describe and understand what a book actually is in all aspects.

As a group we were given questions with a set time to discuss the question and our answers. The questions that were given to us had no wrong answers, which means we could explore all the ideas that we had towards answering the given question.
We worked on large sheets of paper for each question a separate sheet, which gave us the ability to write down and record more than one answer to the given question, almost like a spider diagram.

'What is a Book?'

Here are all the words with some explanation that link to what we think a book is.

Fact or fiction, so a book can either be an adventure or story, or it can be something to provide new knowledge or information on something we do not know or would like to know.

It provides language of all different kinds as well as numbers

The way a book is made gives it the ability to fold, stand, it gives it protection which keeps it safe to be used over and over.

A cover so we know what the book is about and a blurb which gives us a small definition of what is inside the book.

It can be constructed in different sized paragraphs and lines, headers, footers.

A book can be full of illustrations and images. either with or without text, a book can hold both.

It s a type of communication, through different ways, examples could be how the information in the book relates to the reader, or it could be a way for the author and, or illustrator of the book to connect, express and speak to the reader.

'What is the Purpose of a Book?'

We came up with the ideas that is was a way to inform people.

To entertain.

To be able to remind someone of a memory or anything that could connect with the reader.

A book can be a planner to hold dates, information or things to do with our own lives.

It holds the ability to create a connection between the author and the reader.

To share information or imagination.

It can become a scrapbook to hold any information we wish.

It has the ability to make someone experience different emotions.

A book is a way to communicate like being able to share ideas, a message, a reminder and knowledge.

The questions above are the ones that I personally gained knowledge from, it helped me to really analyse and think about what a book actually is, how different it can be, as in it can be constructed in more than one way. A book can provide so many different things, information, design, look, image, color, shape, size, emotions, connections and many other things.

Being able to discuss these two main questions in a group has definitely helped me towards having the ability to create my own book and designing it however i wish.
