OUGD503 - YCN - WRAP Recycling Campaign - Development - Concept

After carrying out some research into recycling campaigns I felt I could then move onto my own concept for WRAP's campaign and design.

I made some notes and worked with my research to come up with the best idea, Keeping in mind that I wanted to combine the idea with Leeds College of Art, where I study. Below is my Concept for my campaign 'GreenerStudents'.

GreenerStudent's will be a campaign that works with and inspires students at Leeds College of Art to recycle more. LCA is an art college therefore the college already promotes it's own level of recycling. However this has no real effect on the students an recycling amongst student within the college is at a low level. Students do not really make use of the facilities within the college such as special colour coded bins that encourage recycling. To Inspire students within the college to personally recycle more, my campaign 'GreenerStudents' will ask students to take photo's of them recycling the rubbish that they want to throw away. the photos can be posted by students onto the Colleges Website 'eStudio' which is used by all students in the college on a daily basis. In return for the photos students can be chosen at random to win a prize that can be used in the college, such as Printing Credit or a Voucher to use at the college resource shop, both are extremely popular amongst students of LCA. The more a student posts photos of recycling then the more chance they have of winning!.

I hope to use this campaign to raise awareness amongst students of LCA and then the level of personal recycling to rise.

To make this campaign successful I will begin by designing the promotion that is needed to get students to be aware of 'GreenerStudents' and spread them around the college.

After I have raised awareness of the campaign I will then move onto contacting my course leader about using the college website to work with the campaign for students to upload their images.

I then also plan to work with the college on my idea for recycling to arrange the prizes that can be awarded to the students that win with their recycling images. Getting the printing studio, library and college shop involved with the campaign will definitely be essential for this to be an effective way to raise awareness for recycling.

I am really excited to start on my designs and receive some feedback to find out whether my campaign will be successful or not.

OUGD503 - YCN - WRAP Recycling Campaign - Development

I have been working on some names for the campaign, I have played around with different words that express the campaign image. After some thought I have decided to use the name 'GreenerStudents' I think this is the best name to use because it is short and to the point, I also think it will work well with any kind of medium I design to connect students with the recycling campaign.

'GreenerStudents' is the best name I can think of for the recycling project so far, So whilst I am waiting for more responds to my questionnaire I have began experimenting with the brand name with it's colour and typeface.

my first type face experimentation is called 'Plantiya Regular'

From Dafont.com this font could be useful to the brand because it the image is quite imperfect, and since this the brand is for recycling I feel the style can go either towards something that is perfect or imperfect depending on the image that I want to produce, however at this moment in time I am not entirely sure what image i want to produce.

I also used HEX colours to experiment with different shades of green, I am not exactly sure what the main colour will be for this campaign but I felt green was the best place to start.

I feel as though that if there was a bolder font available in this typeface then I would probably opt for that one, for impact purposes. I will continue to experiment until I have found a good font to use as a base typeface for the whole campaign.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Collaborative - Beer Bottle Design Research

When creating the main cider bottle design, I wanted to create something that was new and fresh for Orchard Pig. However since the design for the new Cider bottle label is quite an important one as far as branding for this business goes, I want to carry out a little research into successful beer and cider branding designs.

Mainly concentrating on contemporary designs.

I came across a website called 'Oh Beautiful Beer' Which displayed contemporary and very effective beer bottle designs from all around the world, this website would give me a lot of inspiration before designing the new label for Orchard Pig.

http://www.ohbeautifulbeer.com/

Below are some of my favourite designs

The design on the left is quite similar to the style of the logo redesign I have made, which tells me that simplicity for alcohol beverages branding can be effective. The design on the right I found really interesting because of how unfamiliar it is. The design is quite dominant and scary with it's image. I think the simplistic design and minimal colour use is beautiful.

The design on the left is very beautiful and elegant, it's definitely the type of design that I want to be able to produce myself in the future, in such a way that it gives maximum effect for it's medium. The design on the right I found interesting because of single colour use. How using gold and pattern making emphasises importance.

Both of the designs above I found interesting because of the contemporary style that is being displayed, both designs are pretty fitting for that of a beer bottle and is similar to the design that I want to create for the Orchard Pig bottle.

I really love all the designs above, the variety of contemporary designs is very appealing and I can see why these designs have been so successful when used part of the owners branding style.

OUGD503 - YCN brief - WRAP Recycling campaign - Research

After carrying out some research through asking questions to other students, I then wanted to carry out some research into campaigns that deal with advertising, I am hoping that there are companies out there that have created campaigns about recycling that have largely included the mindset of students and where students stand with the idea of recycling, this way I can get a good idea of how these campaigns have included the student population with recycling and conserving materials.

Since the overall idea is that students do not really participate with recycling and thinking about conserving the worlds quickly draining materials. I want to get a better ideas in which the best way will be to go about using my design work and incorporating that into a brand which will inspire students to get more involved with recycling from day to day.

The first campaign I want to take a better look at is the 'Recycle Now' National campaign. Since this is the countries current campaign that is used by everyone, I want to take a look at the design work and language used.

There are a lot of branches within the recycle now campaign, each for a different type of material that the world consumes, such as plastic, glass, food, water ect. Each section of awareness uses the same similar style of branding but is altered to suit the cause. My favourite so far from the recycle now campaign are the designs to stop food waste.

The current subject on the food recycling campaign, is recycling food to create energy to be used for communities. I think the design work for this campaign is very effective, using images in very clever ways to create a message.

The designs are very effective because they incorporate images of wasted food and electrical energy. with the messages incorporated into each design makes towards a really effective campaign.

Another subject is on plastic transformation materials. The designs for this campaign I found really funny and interesting.

I think these designs work amazingly well, because the materials that are being advertised have been given a living style of thought process which gives a sense of personality to each design. I think it is an idea that works really well when connecting to the public.

I have also come across a recycling campaign created by students that aims at students within manchester. Targeting student living areas where levels of recycling are low. The campaign is called 'Golden Bin' and the campaign was made with the hashtag #rubbishselfie

The campaign was all about promoting the waste and recycling disposal system that a lot of new students are un familiar with in manchester. The idea was a student to take a selfie of them recycling and in return their selfie could win them prizes.

The students that created the campaign had contacted companies such as Tesco and Whetherspoon to donate prizes for students that took part in the #rubbishselfie.
The campaign turned out to be quite successful with lot's of students taking part and posting with the hashtag.

It seemed that a lot of the promotion of this campaign was done through social media, which was quite clever. There are also some attractive designs that were created which were spread across student living areas in manchester to promote taking a rubbish selfie in return for possibly winning a prize.

The campaign was quite extensive as it took over two academic years from start to finish. The campaign seemed to be very successful as after the campaign was over there was a 37% increase rate of students now recycling more and being more aware of waste material.

This is a really good example of something I would like to achieve with my recycling campaign.

Continuing my research into similar recycling campaigns involving students and their lifestyles. I cam across another that was similar called 'The recycling games'

the campaign was created by students to work with students at the university of bolton, the concept was to create real life recycling games that could be played on and off campus, in hopes to increase the level of recycling that students do.

The games were fairly strait forward, students were participating in a race to see who could collect the most recycling items. the idea and theme of the event which was held at the university of bolton campus, created a lot of awareness especially with students about the importance of recycling.

The designs for the event are fun and lively which is good for attracting the attention of students.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Secret 7 Submission

I am really pleased with how the design for CHVCHES - Clearest Blue, has turned out. I feel that I have expressed the song within my design.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Secret 7 - Research

I want to use the colours blue and silver which communicate with the song Clearest Blue for my secret 7 design.

I want to carry out some research into designs that possibly connect with music in some way, that experiment the with blue and silver, hopefully to gain some ideas and inspiration for my own design. I also want to do a little research into any designs that connect with the the key words collected from Clearest Blue.

I found a few other images, mostly album covers which had used different shades of blue and greys/silvers

I really like the different balance of greys and blues in some of the designs above. I especially like the designs that only have a note of blue, designs that haven't gone over the top with colour use I feel are more effective than other.
I would love to achieve something similar with my designs whilst concentrating on my key words to create a more explanatory design.

I also came across a small website that displayed a vast amount of colour codes, which was useful to me when looking at different shades of blue and silver/grey. I want to use this website to help me get the best balance of colour in my design.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Secret 7 - Development

After carrying out my research and a little photography I was able to begin working on my cover sleeve design.

I wanted to keep the design interesting yet simple. I wanted there to be a lot negative space on my design so to give all the attention the the image that I produce.
I started by importing the images of trees and branches that I had thought would be effective for the design. Below is my favourite image.

I loved how the image of this tree matched so closely to that dark theme of the song and the environment that was in the music video. I thought it would be the best image to use and edit long with my researched colours, blue and silver.

I altered the image constantly over and over, whilst exploring with different shades of blue and grey/silver. Below are a few practice designs that I created during the experimentation. I wanted a very perfect image of a tree so I altered the image to make the tree more balanced. I then used the brush preset tool to transform the section of the image I required into a brush I could use endlessly. this was really useful because it made the process of making changes, adding and taking away elements a lot easier. It also gave me the ability to experiment with different shades of blue without any confusion.

I liked these designs for an album cover however I felt that they were too weak to use as design for the song.
I took these designs to peers for some feedback. The feedback i received was quite mixed, I was told that the designs were very tranquil but were maybe a little too simple and needed to be more interesting. I also received comments on the colour use within the design, I received a comment to increase the colour in the design. Since I wanted to use the colours blue and silver, the designs above seemed to be lacking in those colours.

I continued with the design, and decided to emphasise the image of the tree by mixing it with more blue.

I had the idea of overlapping to achieve this, the technique of overlapping let me emphasise the amount of colour I could use on the single image whilst keeping the design simple and neat. I wanted to communicate the style of the song and the song name into the design.

I am really happy with how the design came out for 'clearest blue', I really wanted to give attention the the theme of the song and communicate the word 'blue' and 'clear' Also i tried to incorporate the nature of my key words into the style to achieve something expressive.
However I feel that if I had more time to experiment with the design, I would have liked to have used more shaded of blue and maybe experiment with more new brush creations.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Secret 7 - Brief and Ideas

For my next project, I will be designing an album cover for the secret 7 competition brief. I will choose a song from 7 pre selected tracks, each song a different genre and artist. I participated in the 2015 secret 7 competition brief which I really enjoyed, so I am excited to create something new and better for this years selection.

The tracks to choose from are:

CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue
Eta James - At Last
Jack Garrett - Worry
The Jam - Art School
John Lennon - Imagine
Max Ritcher - Dream 3
Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better

After listening to each track my favourite was Clearest Blue by CHVRCHES. I really liked the style and sound of the song.

I found out that the song had a music video on youtube, So to get a better idea of what the song was about I spent a few minutes to take a look. The music video was very dark themed. The video presented the singer dressing in armour walking through dark woodland during the night, until the song gradually came to the synth pop sound explosion at the end which saw her dancing in a club with alcohol.
I did have some trouble understanding the video but I really like both the song and the video so I am excited to start working on some designs for the album cover.

CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue

I decided to re watch the video and write down words that I think best describe the video and the sound of the song. Then at the end I will be able to use these key words to help me design something perfect for the cover.

The key words I wrote down from the song an video are

Dark
Pop
Sounds
Light
Confusing
Nature
Silver
Armour
Black
Blue
Steel
Soft
Dance
Beat
Catchy
Fun
Shocking

These words describe how I felt when listening to the song and watching the video, so I will use them to help me with my design.

After collecting some keywords, I really want to create something using the colours silver and blue, so to match the name of the song and the lyrics in the song, also the video displayed a lot of silver so I really want to use that along with the blue.

There are a lot of synthetic pop/dance sounds in the song which give me the feeling of 'imperfection' possibly things and objects that are not perfect. The lyrics in the song are quite interesting and have a dark tone to them so I could possibly use an image that is quite organic or somehow connects to nature, (trees, Branches, dead foliage). I think they would be quite effective elements.
On the cover design would like to use an image or image of an object that holds the main attention and explanation of the song. I want to use something that relates to the dance and pop feelings that are created by the song.

I first plan to go out into the woodland that is close by where I live and take a few photos that I could possibly use for my design.

OUGD503 - Penguin Random House Design Award - Submission

After altering the size of my finished book cover I was finally able to submit my design to the penguin random house brief. I was a little nervous about submitting my design because I am sure there would be thousands of other designs to compete against.

However I am really pleased with how my design turned out, I feel that I have communicated the storyline of A Clockwork Orange effectively through my idea and design, I hope that the judges like my design.
