OUGD503 - Responsive - SB01 - Large project - Wristband design

I have just finished the first draft of what imagine the MONIGIE wristband to look like if it were to be designed physically.

I took a lot of ideas from other digital wrist band designs because there are a lot since wrist bands are now very popular in the app and digital world, like the Apple Watch.

Below is the fist design.

I kept the design simple and straight forward. The device did not need much more than a simple LCD screen to display readings as most if not all of the information would be sent to the mobile app.

The device will be available in colours, as I only designed in shades of black and white for the time being.

I am currently not sure on the position of the logo yet so I have decided to keep it below the LCD screen, so it is visible to other people.

OUGD503 - Responsive - SB01 - Large project - App design research

I plan to design an application for the Monigie device, The app can be used to measure the data that the device collects over the day and night.

I will first start to research health applications, and body monitoring devices/apps to see how they are designed and presented on a mobile device.

I found a website that had listed different health and fitness apps. Some were quite similar and others had were for specific purposes. Either way all of the apps were designed beautifully and I took photos of my favourites.

All of the above designs are very effective and modernised however I want too concentrate more on 'Fitbit' technology. For this post I want to look at the mobile application so to do this I downloaded the app onto my own phone and made an account. To navigate and look around.

The images above are the first pages you see when the app is opened, The bright colours are very welcoming and eye pleasing.

The Fitbit app is really nice, it's very fluid on the screen and simplistic with the use of bright colours is really nice. I love the chosen typeface also.

The app is good because everything is easily accessible and clear to understand.

OUGD503 - SB01 - Responsive - Large Project Logo & App Design

One of the designs for my large project which I have now named 'MONIGIE' will include a wrist band which will be in similar design to the Fitbit wrist band and will also measure bodily functions just like the Fitbit.

I have started designing the logo for the invention for my large project which I have named 'Monogie'
I came up with the name by combining the word 'energy' and 'monitor' together which made something unique and relevant for my idea to build and emotion monitoring device.

Blow is the first logo and possibly the final design.

I designed the logo to be professional but a little informal at the same time which us why I  created the emotion within the design.

After showing the design to a few people I managed to receive all positive feedback for the design.

I next plan to work on the mobile app design next, as the data which will be collected from the device will be able to be viewed through the mobile app as well as a small screen that will be build into the monigie wristband.

Below is the final logo design for the mobile application.

OUGD503 - Responsive - SB01 - Large Project - Product Design

I have been thinking a lot about the design of the product, which is the object that will be used to measure peoples emotions.

I want the product to be small enough that it is almost unnoticeable, meaning the product would not have to be taken off the body as much. This way the product has the ability too take a full 24/7 reading of the persons emotions, day and night.

I have two separate ideas for the product.

The first is possibly a wristband design
The features of this design would be
-
long life power (meaning no need to charge to keep the device active 24/7)
The product would be made from a metal, possibly aluminium to measure pulse and other variables.
The band would be available in the colours Black/white/gold/silver.

The only downside to this design would be that it is not a very un noticeable design. So there maybe a chance that the user would want to take off the device during sleep or events that would require the device to be removed. which would image the 24/7 recordings of emotion.

If I were to choose this style of design I may decide to base the design of Fitbit bands. The design and purpose of fit bit bands are a very good example of what my product would look like.

The second idea would be a much smaller and un noticeable design.

It would read the emotions the exact same way as the band design, only the design would be a lot smaller and would have less chance of being removed from the users body.

The features of the design would be:

created to be positioned behind a persons ear (left or right)
Colours would be available in black or white

The device would be waterproof meaning swimming and showering wouldn't cause a problem.

the device would use power from a long life battery similar to that of a pacemaker.
The device would connect to an app on a mobile phone which would transfer the data.

-

I am not entirely sure what the device will look like as I have only made a few sketches so far. but I hope to have a final design soon.
I am also unsure about which design would be more successful in this project which is why I have thought up of two separate designs.

OUGD503 - Responsive - SB01 - Large Project - Creative Conscience Award - Idea

After writing down many different ideas for the CC (Creative Conscience) Award.

I came up with an idea which could be applied in a sociology and psychology aspect by measuring the levels of peoples emotions.

The idea begins with an extremely small device which is attached to the body, making it unnoticeable and non foreign.
The device measures a persons emotions and separates them into good emotions and bad emotions.

The device will then record everything and suggest options for the the person to avoid certain situations or offer options which the person can sue to reduce the level of bad emotion in future.

The device will also have the ability to share your good and bad emotion levels through social media, like Facebook. So other people will be able to look at each others levels. which could increase a persons awareness of there sense of self and wellbeing.

I also plan to design an app for the product. This will be used to display information that is collected about the body from the device.

OUGD503 - Responsive - SB01 - Large project - Brief

For my second smaller project for studio Brief 01 I wanted to try something completely different.

I decided to search different websites apart from the ones provided from the ones provided by the university. mostly because I didn't really see any project that I wanted to do on any of the provided websites.

I came across a website which had listed many different design competitions just for students and professional designers. This website had much more to offer too. I clicked on various competitions until I found one that really interested me.

CreativeConscienceAward.org

Is an award for designs which spread awareness and promote ideas that can change the world and even the way people think.

What is great is that the design can literally be about anything as long as it has the power to change something or innovate people. Possibly change the perception of someones life.

OUGD503 - TKAMB - Design decision

I want to base the redesign of TKAMB (to kill a mockingbird) On simplicity.

My first draft of the design was too simplistic and I felt it needed something more to make the cover design a little more appealing and appropriate to the story.

As I was focusing on the symbols of the tree and the mockingbird (the mockingbird which I already had), I thought on how else I might apply a more nature/tree vibe to the design.

I knew that there was a lot of empty space on the cover design so I began thinking about texture layers, which if applied can make a nice base to build a design from.

From this I googled different tree textures, mostly bark and similar textures as they are the most interesting to look at.

I favoured more towards the lighter and white shades of bark because I felt that using a lighter shade would make it easier to view the layers of design over the top of the texture base layer.

OUGD503 - Collaborative practice - Design - Anxiety

I have been thinking a lot about what the posters for the Adobe Project should
'express'.

Should they show what anxiety and depression looks like or should they show ways which can cure the illness? or possibly even both?

My original idea was to show what bad mental health looked like on the inside so people who don't understand or who have never experienced it can understand a little more.

These images above would be an amazing example of what I would like to achieve in the group work.

Then I came across a different image which instead showed more of 'how to heal the problems' caused by by depression and anxiety.

This then made me think about whether the posters should express depression and anxiety from both ends. What it feels like to deal with these issues and how to help yourself get out of them.

OUGD503 - Collaborative practice - Research - Anxiety

I have started building some research for the collaboration project.

Since I am searching for images of depression/anxiety in an art form I thought to look to Pinterest to see if I could find anything there.

I found a lot great art form examples.

The first page I found

https://uk.pinterest.com/charlottesnewin/emotional-human-form/

The images above are very special, I think they speak a lot about mood and how someone who lives with clinical depression and anxiety. The images show how a person feels on the inside. This sort of mood and image on a day to day basis can be a very destructive and complex thing to deal with.

These are the kind if images that I think would work well for the adobe project. To make people more aware and understand how bad mental health works and what it looks and feels like on the inside of a person.

I am hoping that myself and my collaboration partner can take inspiration from this.

OUGD503 - responsive - Collaborative practice

After agreeing with my collab partner to work on the D&AD 'Adobe' project for collaborative practice we then decided to move onto what subject would be best for the project.

We wanted to create something that would have the ability to inform and inspire others.

An idea we had was to create something which expressed the form of anxiety.

We agreed that anxiety is a mental health issue which is becoming a more known illness. people are becoming diagnosed a lot more lately with a mental health problems.

We thought that using the adobe brief to create a series of posters which expressed the art from of anxiety and depression. Would be something that can be used to alert other people of the the growing stigma which is attached to anxiety and other mental health issues.

Over the next few days we will be researching through the latest art and design work which has been created with mental health and the feeling of anxiety in mind.

OUGD503 - Responsive - TKAMB Cover research

I Wanted to carry out some research into previous design for Harper Lee's How to Kill a Mockingbird.

I wanted to get an invite into how other people have interpret the story into the cover design. I found a page on the website VisualNews.com which displayed some of the best HTKAMB cover designs.

Below are my favourite.

There seems so be so many different designs for this story. Which is understandable because the story is a very inspirational one. However I think these ones above are very beautiful.. and they really c`pure what the story is about and the mockingbird symbol.

OUGD503 - Responsive - SB01 - To Kill a Mocking Bird research

After reading To Kill a Mocking Bird, I built up a few notes on the story that I would be able to look back on and evaluate with. making notes about the story has helped my vision of the book cover re design.

Story takes place in Alabama

The story is narrated by a little girl who is names Jean Louise Finch (scout)

She has a father names Atticus finch who is a lawyer with high standards.

The girl (scout) her brother and their friend are all intrigues by the local rumours of a man names boo Bradley, who loves in their neighbourhood but never leaves his house.

The children try to investigate what is going on in the mysterious mans house during the summer - One night the children sneak over to the house to peak through the windows - Inside the house ‘Boos’ brother who also lives I the house mistake the children for something else and fires a gun - Which then causes scout, her brother and their fiend to run away. One of the children gets their pants caught on a fence and looses them - only to then mind them later on in the night neatly folded with the tear from the fence loosely repaired and sewn up.

Other odd things also happen during the summer. Strange gifts such as pennies and chewing gum are left for the children by a mysterious hole in a tree every so often. Only to then eventually find the hole filled with cement.

One night the children are stood outside in the night witnessing a local house which had caught on fire. Scout soon after realises that she had a blanket around her without her even realising it. She assumes that ‘boo Bradley must have put it on her to protect her from the cold.

Atticus the father of scout, decided to take on a case which involves a black man named ‘tom Robinson’ who was accused of raping a very poor white girl. The girl who is part of the ’notorious Ewell family’ who also belongs to a layer of the Macomb society which people refer to as ‘trash’.

The entire Finch family face a lot of criticism from the heavily racist Macomb because Atticus decides to defend the black man ’tom’. And even with all of the criticism from the community, he still goes ahead with the case because his conscience will not let him do otherwise - Atticus knows tom is innocent, even thought he knows there is no chance of him winning the case as the ‘white jury’ will never believe a black man over a white woman.

Atticus wants to reveal the truth to his fellow townspeople to expose the bigotry and encourage the possibility of racial equality.

After the trial there is a large amount of evidence such supports tom, however because the jury are racist they still decide that tom is guilty as they would never believe the word of a black man.

Before Atticus can apply for a retrial, tom tries to escape from prison and is shot is the process.

Making the ending slightly upsetting.

I understand that the story is about racial equality. The mysterious man that the children meet at the beginning of the story helps to protect 'scout' at the end of the story. My favourite part of this story is probably the trial which makes the jury think about the fact that a black man may not be guilty for the crime he has been accused of. It is a really good lesson within a beautiful story.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Studio Brief 01

Foe this brief I will be creating design for a number of small projects as well as working on designs for one substantial project.

For the first small project for Responsive SB01 I have chosen to work on the 'Penguin Random House Design Award'. I usually enter this competition every year because I thoroughly enjoy working on book cover designs, mainly because I enjoy interpreting the subject of the story into the design that will be placed on the front and back cover.

This year the adult fiction book will be 'To Kill a MockingBird'.

I have never read this book, however I have heard a lot of comments about how amazing and interesting the book is, which makes me want to investigate more into the story. I do plan to read the book before I begin my design so I fully understand how best to interpret the story into the the cover design.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Collaborative project choice

As a group we decided to look through the D&AD website for the perfect project. There was a huge variety of different projects and companies top choose from however we decided to choose the project created by 'Adobe'.

We decided on adobe because is was the project which allowed the most 'freedom' during the design process. The project asks the designers to think back to the past to something we learnt which then lead us to make better choices in life. Then using this information to design something using only image and no text to inspire and inform other people.

We feel that this project was best suited to the creative abilities of graphic design and illustration.
